Two New Board Members Elected to the IAEH Board

Two New Board Members Elected to the IAEH Board

The International Association for Ecology and Health is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Alessandra Nava and Dr. Gerardo Suzán to the Board.

Learn more about Dr. Nava and Dr. Suzán below.

Dr. Alessandra Nava

For more than a decade, Dr. Alessandra Nava has worked in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, working with sentinel species such as jaguars, ocelots and peccaries. Alessandra is a veterinarian with a passion for wildlife and public health and she is also a member of the IUCN Peccaries specialist group. As a senior consultant scientist at EcoHealth Alliance, Dr. Nava leads research efforts for EcoHealth Alliance’s IDRC project in Brazil. The program monitors and identifies pathogens in and around fragments of the Atlantic Forest (of which only 10% remains). These hotspots are generally where wildlife, livestock, and human interactions mix.

Dr. Nava is compiling field data to develop new predictive models that will be tested in the field. Her goal is to also build capacity by providing training and access to new technologies in communications, information management, sample collection and handling, and pathogen identification. Alessandra earned her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of São Paulo. Her dissertation research focused on the inter-connectivity of humans, wildlife, and ecosystem with a focus on diseases that jump from domesticated animals and the possible spill over to wild species. The close proximity of agricultural practices in Brazil to forested areas makes the threat of emerging diseases even greater. Previously, Alessandra conducted an outreach program for the local settlers living around the forest fragments to help improve the health of their livestock and implement an animal welfare campaign. The goal of the program was to control the number of dogs and cats through neutering and to increase the healthy status of domesticated animals around protected areas to decrease the risk of new diseases infiltrating native wildlife.

Dr. Gerardo Suzán
geraldo
Prof. Suzán has helped to advance the field of ecohealth through science, education and outreach. He has worked with infectious disease ecology in vertebrates in different countries (e.g., Costa, Panama, USA, Mexico), and has interconnected conservation biology and infectious disease dynamics, including zoonoses like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, toxoplasmosis, plague, bartonellosis, and rabies, among others. He is the founder and President of the Mexican Society for Conservation Medicine, and he belongs to the Mexican National System of Scientists. He has advised 10 bachelors and 11 masters thesis, and he currently advises 4 masters and 8 doctoral students who have been working on different projects in Mexico. He is currently scientific advisor for National and International Institutions on wildlife diseases, and has reviewed and published papers to the EcoHealth Journal.

Two graduate research assistant opportunities in climate change adaptation science and policy

(Apologies for cross-postings)

How do the science on climate change adaptation and adaptation policy interact? What is the role that culture plays in adaptation science and policy in Canada? What do international and Canadian expert scientists and Canadian policy makers think about the future of adaptation?

These questions will be addressed in a 2-year SSHRC funded study titled “Adapting to climate change: science and policy cultures”. Two graduate students are sought to work as research assistants to collect data and help with analysis. Students have the option of writing MA theses based on the research.

To be eligible, candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, have completed an undergraduate degree in geography, environmental studies, environmental science, political science, sociology, anthropology or related discipline with strong academic standing, and have a keen interest in climate change adaptation research. Previous experience with adaptation to climate change and qualitative interviews and analysis are strongly preferred.

The start date is September 2014. Remuneration is based on the Royal Roads University graduate research assistance rate for 15 hours/week for 72 weeks.

Eligible candidates should send (1) a brief expression of interest stating research interests and experience as well as related course work (up to 1 page), (2) a current CV including overall GPA, and (3) the names and contact details of two academic referees to Dr. Johanna Wolf at johanna.1wolf no later than 15 May 2014.

The School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University offers relevant graduate degrees in:

Postdoctoral Position Available – Integrated Forecasting of Malaria List

Postdoctoral Position: Integrated Ecological Forecasting of Malaria Risk in a Changing Climate

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to participate in a NIH-funded study on malaria risk mapping and early warning in the highlands of East Africa. The Epidemic Prognosis Incorporating Disease and Environmental Monitoring for Integrated Assessment (EPIDEMIA) project is focused on the development of a novel “EcoHealth Informatics” approach for integrating disease surveillance with environmental monitoring data from earth observation satellites and applying data-model fusion to generate forecasts of the timing and locations of future epidemics. The position is funded for up to four years and will be located in the Geospatial Sciences Center of Excellence at South Dakota State University. The postdoctoral researcher will use remotely sensed data to develop novel environmental indices of malaria risk, analyze relationships between environmental variability and spatial and temporal patterns of malaria, and work with public health partners to implement the results in an early warning and decision support system.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in epidemiology, geography, ecology, or a related field. The preferred candidate will have experience in both (1) processing of satellite remote sensing data and other types of geospatial datasets, and (2) application of spatio-temporal statistics to analyze epidemiological and ecological datasets. We will consider candidates who have experience in only one of these areas if they can demonstrate a willingness and ability to develop new knowledge and skills. Experience with data assimilation methods and their application for ecological and epidemiological forecasting, knowledge of the R language and environment for statistical computing, and a strong interest in malaria epidemiology are also highly desirable.

To apply for this position, send the following information in electronic form to michael.wimberly: cover letter, curriculum vitae, names and contact information for three references, and unofficial copies of transcripts. Review of applications will begin on May 1st and continue until the position has been filled. The position is available immediately, but start date is negotiable.
